GEOPOLITICAL INSIGHTS: Good Morning from the GEÓ Newsroom in Gibraltar. Geopolitical Insights for Monday 24th July 2023 focusing this morning on the Spanish Elections leaves Spain in abeyance, Ukraine attacks Moscow and US finally have open channel to Pyongyang …

SPANISH ELECTIONS – LEAVE HUNG PARLIAMENT

The Spanish Elections – called as a Snap by incumbent Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez after his party´s poor results in the recent local elections, have left Spain’s political future in abeyance with a hung Parliament seeing both sides claiming victory.

Albeit the Conservative People’s Party won most seats in Sunday’s [230723] vote but unlikely to succeed in the removal of Socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez. Even with the support of the far right, his Popular Party (PP) has fallen short of a majority in parliament. This leaves the key players “scrabbling” around today forging new alliances to be able to form a coalition. RUSSIA ACCUSES UKRAINE OF TERRORIST ACTS

Russian President Vladimir Putin appears to be somewhat discombobulated by the fact that Ukraine has carried out a drone attack that damaged at least two buildings, one believed to have been the Russian Defence Ministry, in the capital Moscow early this morning. [240723]

There seems to be some confusion over the alleged attacks, in one breath the Russian defence ministry said two drones were “suppressed and crashed”, Kremlin speak for they had foiled the attack but in the next breath the Defence Ministry accused Ukraine of a “terrorist” drone attack.

To date Ukraine has not responded to the reports, but in fairness, they rarely comment on attacks inside Russia. This is a fluid news story – follow updates via @GEO_IntelDesk on Twitter using Hashtag #UkraineLatest

US OPENS CHANNEL TO PYONGYANG

While there has been no official statement from Pyongyang about the AWOL US Serviceman who bolted across the DMZ and into the clutches of North Korea it is believed that the UN Command is finally in contact with North Korea after the deputy commander General Andrew Harrison said in an announcement that Channel for dialogue had been established and that the welfare of Private Travis King remains the Command´s primary concern.
