So its said in European circles that the UK is nothing more than a laughing stock globally. First there was the Brexit fiasco which surely by now even the most ardent so called Brexiteers must admit was disasterous, then Boris fell foul of the powers that be, despite being the only leader with a mandate from the electorate, leading to a really complicated and to outsiders unconstitutional leadership race that the worst possible candidate Liz Truss won. Now she’s been given the “bums rush” a hastily cobbled together process gave the premiership away basically to the person with the most “cronies”
So just who is Rishi Sunak and can he actually bring stability to the heavily wounded Tory party?
Well he is considered a “safe pair of hands” in Westminster circles on both sides of the house. He is proven in as much as he was Boris Johnsons Chancellor and stewarded the UK economy through Covid. Mr. Sunak was behind the financial aid during lockdowns including furlough payments and the “Eat Out to Help Out” scheme for restaurants.
Rishi Sunak was born in Southampton in 1980, where his parents had settled after they emigrated from east Africa. His father was a GP and his mother ran a pharmacy and he is the first British Asian prime minister. Not bad for a lad who only became an MP seven years ago.
Sunak was first elected as an MP in 2015 – for Richmond in north Yorkshire – but rose quickly, and was made chancellor (finance minister) in February 2020 under Boris Johnson who clearly recognised his talents.
